A MILLION MILES FROM HOME

Written for a prompt to utilise Adynaton. This is a form that goes way beyond hyperbole and to a place where exaggeration is taken to a ridiculous and extreme lengths. I’ve used this technique in a song about a bit bruised by life.

ECHOES OF YESTERDAY

Written from a brief to create a song based on a word in another language that doesn’t translate perfectly into English. I chose the Welsh word Hireath which means a pull on the heart that conveys a distinct feeling of missing something irretrievable lost. The song is very loosely about Wales. A recording of the song will be available on SoundCloud in the near future.

IF I HAD

This song was created for a brief about story telling. The first draft of lyrics were horrible - I had tried (and failed) to build something along the lines of Eleanor Rigby. I’m much happier with this version of the lyrics. A demo recording of the song - very much jingle-jangle guitar driven - is available on SoundCloud.

OPEN YOUR EYES

The brief was about unrequited love - the current version of the song is a little bit pop/electronic. This was the first song I recorded after upgrading to Logic Pro X and I was experimenting! A demo is available on SoundCloud.

RECOVER SOON

The chorus was developed in the early 2000s but the rest of the song was put together in 2025. The main objective was to ensure that both parts of the song worked as one thing and don’t feel like two seperate things bolted together. The recording is available on SoundCloud: it is a stripped back sound with only a piano, bass and lead & backing vocals.

SEE HOW THEY RUN

The brief for this song was simply to make a feature of the bridge section. The lyrics are loosely based on the nursery rhyme Three Blind Mice. The characters I saw when writing this song were a lot more mice and a few giant hungry cats.

SAY WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY

This song was originally written for a brief about fairy tales or legends. It was titled Appleman and written about the American folklore legend, Johnny Appleseed. The song fulfilled the brief but I wasn’t happy with the lyrics but liked the melody, so I reworked the lyrics. A demo version is available on SoundCloud but a professionally recorded track is a WIP.

TAKE BACK THE CITY

The brief was to write a song in the future tense. The song is about encouraging someone to get themselves together. This is very much a demo - the bridge is a WIP.

THE ONLY ONE LEFT BEHIND

Created for a brief about being the last remaining human being on Planet Earth following a catastrophic event, dissonance and dischords are utilised to suggest disorientation and deep sadness. My original post-apocalyptic lyrics have been revised and the central theme is one of overwhelming loss. It’s the saddest song I’ve written to date.

TO KILL OR DIE FOR

The assignment was to analyse a song and use it for inspiration. I chose Never Tear Us Apart by INXS. The song structure is similiar, the vibe and the chords are the same (bar one swap). Rather than the layers of synths however, the current demo version of the track on SoundCloud is a relaxed pop / jazz production. A professionally recorded, mixed & mastered version is currently in progress - this will be quite a different sound with more driving guitars - more indie than jazz / easy listening leaning.

WORLD GONE MAD

WIP but getting closer to completion.

ALL I WANT IS YOU

This is a Christmas song for a Christmas brief. I wanted something with movement, something which talked up the magical elements of Christmas but without being too saccharine.
